How Many Computers Are Needed?

Most flight simulates require two computers for adequate performance and fidelity. More than two computers is usually not necessary and would result increased complexity and maintenance.

Main Computer

The main sim computer is used for the flight simulator program, such as Prepar3D, which creates the external visual graphics. It also runs the specialized software, such as ProSim737, that emulates the B-737 aircraft systems as well as provides integration of the various software and hardware sim components. The processing and graphical output demands for all those tasks are extremely high and there is not enough capability for adding additional functions without creating a negative impact on frame rate and smoothness.

The main computer needs to have high performance capability, with specifications that meet a high-end gaming computer.

Secondary Computer

The secondary computer is primarily responsible for running a suite of aircraft simulator applications that emulate the various aircraft systems and create graphic output for the six flight deck LCD displays. This computer also is used for interfacing with most of the flight deck hardware that use USB for connectivity. Also, various utility programs are run on this computer such as those that incorporate real world weather. This

A secondary computer with moderate performance capability is adequate. However, this computer does need to have the ability for connection to seven external displays, so it must have two graphic cards.
